CAGE LIGHT

2016

Aim

The human race has always had a fascination with light. From fire in the days of the cavemen to the invention of the light bulb in 1879. Our lives have always been dictated by the presence of light. The aim of this project is to design and build a ‘light object’.

Concept

I want to create a light with geometric elements but is simple in its appearance, intended for commercial use. I was inspired as I walked through the streets of the Perth CBD looking at the geometric shapes made by the skyscrapers and other forms of architecture.

Outcome

The result is my largest creation to date. I faced many challenges with this project using all these materials, tools and techniques for the first time. My challenges included, firstly not being able to connect my mesh faces. It was a case of elimination by trying many types of soldering irons and soldering wire until I found one that actually melted and held to the mesh, this was also helped by the use of soldering fluid. In the end I created a light object with a strong geometric form seems light with the meshed faces. The design was exhibited at the Edith Cowan University Grad. Show and was on display for the next year within the university.
